A boat with 49 immigrants of Maghreb origin on board was rescued this Sunday in waters near Lanzarote, Salvamento Marítimo has reported.
At 2:15 a.m., the Maritime Rescue Center in Las Palmas received a notice from the Civil Guard reporting a boat sailing towards the Canary Islands, something that 112 also alerted.
The maritime controllers of the center informed the ships sailing in the area and asked them to be alert, in addition to notifying the Rabat Rescue Center, who took charge of the search in their area.
After multiple attempts to contact the boat by telephone, at around 7:15 a.m. it was achieved, which allowed its position to be known and the nearest ship, the Castillo de Pambre, to be diverted to the area.
Shortly before 8:00 a.m., this ship reported that it had spotted the boat and was sailing behind it to maintain visual contact, while the Salvamar Al Nair was going to meet it.
At around 10:00 a.m., the Salvamar Al Nair rescued the 49 people who were on the boat, all from the Maghreb (45 men, three women and one child).
With all the rescued on board, the Salvamento Marítimo vessel has transferred them to Puerto Naos where the Red Cross will assist them.
