UNED Lanzarote has expressed its concern after the dissemination of the press release issued by the Arrecife City Council on the occasion of the annual tribute to the Lanzarote physicist Blas Cabrera Felipe. In the institutional statement, they point out, no mention was made of the presence and activity of the university in the building of the old Tourist Parador, where it has been based since 1980.
The educational community of UNED on the island is currently made up of 536 students in regulated education —which includes degrees, masters, doctorates, access courses and languages—, in addition to 133 people enrolled in the UNED Senior program and a team of 48 teachers. Throughout the year, University Extension courses are also held at the center, as well as various cultural and social activities, which last year brought together more than 200 people, not counting those with free attendance such as book presentations or dramatized readings.
From the island academic institution they understand that the omission in the note may have been due to an oversight in the final drafting, although they recall that they have sent several letters to the mayor requesting the repair and painting of the facade of the building, while moving towards an expected comprehensive renovation of the building, of which they occupy more than 60% of its premises.
Finally, UNED wanted to emphasize its active contribution to the citizen use of the building, as demonstrated by the activities that are being held this Monday afternoon in the Aula Magna and the Biosphere Classroom, and of which photographs have been provided as a sample.
