At least fifteen flights have been diverted to the airports of Tenerife North and Gran Canaria after the Tenerife South aerodrome became inoperative after the landing of an airplane that blocked the runway, AENA sources informed EFE.

The incident occurred after an executive-type plane, that is, a private flight, blocked the Tenerife South runway on Thursday afternoon after landing.

The airport has been inoperative until the plane that caused the incident can be towed and the Spanish Airports and Air Navigation sources have indicated that they are working to try to clear the runway and restore normality as soon as possible.

In turn, the air controllers have reported on their social media account that there have been diversions to alternative airports and delays for security reasons, and have indicated in this regard that they are managing "the avalanche" of diverted flights in the first moments.

The airport returned to normal about two hours later.
