A loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) was spotted this Saturday, January 3rd, on the beach next to Camping Papagayo, in the municipality of Yaiza, as reported by a reader of La Voz.

According to testimony received by this outlet, a citizen who was in the area alerted the Environment Department of the Canary Islands Government after detecting the animal on the shore. Following the call, environmental agents were requested to intervene and travel to the location to assess the turtle's health and determine if it required assistance or transfer to a specialized center.

The reader has also provided this outlet with an image of the specimen, which confirms it is a loggerhead sea turtle, a protected species that inhabits the archipelago's waters and occasionally approaches the coast for reasons that may be related to fatigue, disorientation, or health problems.

Authorities remind us of the importance of not disturbing or bothering these animals, maintaining distance, and immediately notifying 112 or the Department of Environment of any sightings, to ensure their protection and well-being.
