The German inmate who died this Tuesday at the Tahíche Penitentiary Center had already tried to commit suicide on several occasions, according to sources close to the case. On one occasion, he even had to be transferred to the hospital after ingesting a large number of pills. According to Penitentiary Institutions, the inmate hanged himself, just like the prisoner of Galician origin who was found dead in his cell last Monday the 15th.

In the last of the cases, the deceased was found in an isolation cell on Tuesday afternoon. The man, who responds to the initials E.K.E., was 51 years old. Prison officials found him in an isolation cell, where he had hanged himself after spending several hours in it. According to sources close to the case, this inmate had already tried to commit suicide on several occasions.

The inmate was a German citizen who had been in the penitentiary center in pre-trial detention for almost two years. He was charged with the crimes of attempted homicide and extortion. The prisoner was to face a trial to answer for these two crimes that was going to be held during the month of April, although it had finally been postponed. The Prosecutor's Office was asking for 17 years in prison for this man.

This inmate had allegedly been hired by a businessman from Lanzarote to take the lives of two self-employed professionals, one from Lanzarote and the other from Tenerife. Supposedly, he had threatened these two people with death and had even cut the brake lines of one of their vehicles. The deceased was allegedly planning to blow up the vehicle of the professional from Tenerife as well and was willing to end the lives of these two people for the amount of 20,000 euros.

Pill ingestion

According to sources close to the case, this prisoner had had several suicide attempts. For this reason, he had been several times within the suicide prevention protocol, which is established by prison doctors. In this sense, even on one occasion, he almost succeeded and had to be transferred to the José Molina Orosa Hospital, after ingesting "a lot of pills". The inmate was in treatment and, probably, saved the medications to take them all at once.

In addition, he maintained a hunger strike for more than 20 days on other occasions, although lately "he looked better". According to these sources, he insisted on his innocence and, as a protest against Justice, he had stopped eating during that period of time.

At the time of the events, this German was in an isolation cell, after having starred in a fight with another inmate in the infirmary of the Tahíche prison. According to these same sources, the deceased was a "quiet man, he didn't relate much, he was a bit isolated".
