The security commissioner of the Spanish embassy in Brazil arrested this Tuesday in Vitoria (state of Espíritu Santo, Brazil) served as commissioner in Lanzarote. Jesús Figón, who in 1994 was commissioner on the island of Lanzarote, confessed to the Brazilian authorities that he had ended the life of his wife during a marital argument. The commissioner was later released under his diplomatic immunity.

According to information from the EFE agency, the commissioner has been placed at the disposal of the authorities of that country, awaiting the Spanish authorities to decide whether to take over the case (as international diplomatic agreements allow), or leave the investigations in the hands of the Brazilian Justice System.

This same agency reports that Figón voluntarily surrendered to the authorities, before whom he alleged that the death of his wife was caused in self-defense during an argument. His wife, Rosemary Justino Lopes, who was his partner for three decades, was 50 years old.

One year at the head of the Police in Lanzarote

More than 20 years before this event, Figón was stationed in Lanzarote. Specifically, the National Police has confirmed to La Voz that during the year 1994 he served as commissioner on the island. During that time, he led several police operations that had great media impact.

In the La Voz de Lanzarote hemeroteca, information regarding Operation Cage can especially be found, which took place in March of that year in different parts of the island. That police operation targeted drug trafficking and illegal immigration. Raids were carried out in the Las Rapaduras area and in homes of people related to drug trafficking, and also in points of the island where there were immigrants in an irregular situation. Stolen objects valued at 20 million pesetas, more than a kilo of coca paste were recovered then, and the Police expelled 38 people from the country.

After his time on the island, Figón was assigned to Madrid, where he was in charge of the central special operations brigade of the General Information Police Station. He was also chief commissioner in the Madrid town of Alcalá de Henares. In Brazil, he had worked as security commissioner of the Embassy for two years and eight months, although he was going to be relieved of his position. In fact, his position had been announced last week.
