The Civil Guard has shot dead three of the seven tigers that escaped this Tuesday from the "Cocodrilo Park" zoo, located in Corralillos, in Gran Canaria. The animals managed to get out of their cages at around 10:00 a.m. and the agents had to subdue several adult tigers, as reported in a statement. The animals remained at all times in the vicinity of the park, within the security perimeter.
Seven specimens were held in captivity at the zoo and escaped this Tuesday. According to the Civil Guard, the director of the park asked the agents to kill the animals, since the zoo lacked sufficient sedative darts and these were not "sufficiently effective".
To capture the tigers, the Civil Guard initially set up a security cordon approximately one kilometer from the zoo and a police device to locate the animals and prevent them from leaving the park. The danger involved in the escape of these tigers is that the Corralillos neighborhood is located just one hundred meters from the zoo. For this reason, the neighbors have been alerted and asked to take refuge in their homes until the situation is under control.
Shots from their weapons
Finally, the civil guards managed to locate the three escaped tigers, killing them with shots from their short weapons and LC cetmes. In this way, they caused their death and thus ended this situation. "If it were not for the rapid and effective response of the Civil Guard, the situation could have become complicated," this body stated in a statement.
The rest of the tigers are in their cells and the situation has returned to normal. No citizen, zoo worker, or agent has been injured.
In addition to the police device, agents from other units such as the GIR, Seprona, and Citizen Security Group have joined. Thus, 25 Civil Guard agents and 5 Local Police officers have acted to try to locate the tigers and put them back in their cage.
