The robbery and assault suffered by a woman on Thursday afternoon in Puerto del Carmen was "at knifepoint," as confirmed by the Arrecife City Council in a statement. In this event, reported earlier by La Voz de Lanzarote, two people were arrested, both natives of Arrecife, identified by the initials A.M.R and H.A.M, aged 31 and 36, respectively. These two individuals were arrested for their alleged involvement in various crimes of illegal detention, robbery with violence, and assault.
According to the police version, the two detainees allegedly perpetrated a robbery with a bladed weapon in a vehicle, a Citroen C-3. Inside the car was an elderly woman. The assault occurred near the Tías Senior Center. Apparently, the alleged criminals took advantage of the fact that the driver of the vehicle, the victim's son, got out of the car for a few moments to get into it and drive off towards Arrecife with the woman inside. "They held her by the neck, threatening her with something sharp," the City Council stated.
After receiving a notice from the Civil Guard, the Arrecife Local Police set up a device to intercept the vehicle, which was located by a motorized officer on José Antonio Street, on the exit towards the LZ-2 highway. Inside the car, only the woman was found driving, showing wounds on her face and a lot of blood, as well as being in a state of great nervousness.
According to the victim's statements, the assailants, after hitting her in the face, forced her "to give them the PIN of her credit card to withdraw money from an ATM on Méjico Street," after which they went to the Tinasoria neighborhood, where they abandoned the vehicle, leaving the woman alone inside.
The Arrest
The information provided by the woman allowed another Local Police officer to identify the two alleged robbers on Real Street and, after requesting support, they were arrested in a restaurant located on García de Hita Street. Once they were searched, they were found to have a considerable amount of money, for which they did not justify its origin, as well as a silver ring full of blood, according to the police version.
In addition, a witness notified the Arrecife Local Police that he had seen these two people getting rid of some of their belongings. For this reason, the officers carried out a search of the area and found a paper with the PIN number of the victim's credit cards.
The alleged perpetrators of the events were arrested and transferred to the Civil Guard post in Puerto del Carmen, Tías, the municipality where the commission of the aforementioned crimes had begun. For her part, the victim had to be admitted to the José Molina Orosa Hospital due to the injuries sustained.
Both the mayor of Arrecife, Cándido Reguera, and the Councilor for Police, Cristina Marrero, wanted to congratulate the five officers who participated in this service for their good work. "The collaboration between the different security forces and bodies is extremely important to clarify criminal acts," they said in a statement. "Once again, the joint work of the Civil Guard and the Arrecife Local Police has been effective and with positive results," Marrero highlighted.
