The streets of Costa Teguise have dawned stained brown after the passage of the rains that flooded several roads in the tourist town and led to the activation of the island emergency plan. Throughout the morning of this Monday, the operators have continued working on the roads of the municipality to clean them up after they have been flooded between noon and the afternoon of Saturday, April 12.
That same day, the town recorded 100 liters of water per square meter, according to data provided by the Cabildo de Lanzarote. Meanwhile, in Tahíche it was 120.
The mayor of Teguise, Olivia Duque, pointed out on Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero that the rainfall caught the municipality "by surprise" and that "there was nothing organized" or "prepared". At the same time, she assured that "a personal tragedy did not happen, thanks to the speed of the directors" of the hotels "and the people".
According to the balance of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, the town recorded 75 incidents out of the 200 that occurred between this municipality and Arrecife. Among them, four hotels were highly affected due to the floods and one of them even had problems with the electricity supply.
The management of the emergency has left several criticisms from the opposition. Nueva Canarias has asked the town councils to draft their municipal emergency plans and their action plans for floods, while the PSOE has reproached the "lack of foresight" of the Cabildo and the Canarian Government to declare the rain alert. For the moment, the municipality does not have its own action plan for emergencies.
