Agents of the Civil Guard of the Traffic Detachment of Arrecife, the capital of Lanzarote, have investigated a 36-year-old man as the alleged perpetrator of three crimes against road safety. According to a press release from the Benemérita, he allegedly drove recklessly, without a driver's license, since he had completely lost his points, and for driving under the influence of narcotic substances.

The events took place at approximately 4:15 p.m. on June 28, 2025, when the agents were on road surveillance service on the LZ-1 road, in the vicinity of the town of Arrieta, at which time they observed a vehicle circulating through a roundabout without a valid ITV (MOT), so the agents initiated operational monitoring in an official vehicle.

A frustrated escape attempt

When the driver realized that he was being required by the agents to stop in a designated place, he began driving at high speed, ignoring the agents' signals, swerving and making abrupt turns, and without respecting the STOP sign at an intersection. After entering the "PCAN" Gas Station service station in said town at high speed, he dodged the vehicles that were refueling and those that were leaving the pump, forcing a gas station worker to get out of the way to avoid being run over.

Subsequently, he joined the LZ-1 road (Arrecife-Órzola) without respecting the prohibited direction sign, forcing other road users to move to the shoulder to avoid a head-on collision. Once the escaped vehicle takes the exit towards the LZ-42 road (GuatizaMala), it takes a dirt road, at which point the three occupants of the vehicle begin a foot chase, being reached by the agents. After being identified, he was subjected to drug tests, as the agents detected obvious external signs of consumption, testing positive for cocaine and THC.

The driver was informed that he will be investigated as the alleged perpetrator of three crimes against road safety, one of reckless driving, another for driving a car without a driver's license after losing all points, as well as for driving under the influence of narcotic substances.

Sentenced to one year and nine months

From the investigated facts, the corresponding proceedings were instructed and delivered to the Investigating Court no. 2 of Arrecife. Last August, the oral hearing took place in the Criminal Court number 1 of Arrecife, where in a final judgment, said driver was sentenced to nine months in prison for the crime against road safety and one year in prison and deprivation of the right to drive motor vehicles and mopeds for four years for the crime against road safety provided for and punished in article 380.1 of the Penal Code. The convicted person is ordered to pay the court costs.
