A Moroccan citizen has been arrested this Monday by the Civil Guard as allegedly involved in a network of trafficking immigrants, having found "clear indications" that he intended to hide and shelter in his residence in Arrecife the 16 Maghrebi immigrants who arrived in the early hours of Sunday to Monday in Lanzarote.
According to the Civil Guard, this individual was initially confused with the 16 immigrants (initially thought to be 15) who arrived irregularly in the early hours of Monday to the area of La Garita, in the Lanzarote town of Arrieta, and among whom two children under 16 also traveled.
The detainee was found at a bus stop near the landing site along with other immigrants, so it was thought that he could be one of the occupants of the boat. Later, at the Police Station, it was verified through his documentation that he was a citizen with a Moroccan passport and residence in Arrecife.
The Civil Guard suspects that he intended to shelter and hide the immigrants in his residence, with whom he had had "constant contact" through a mobile phone, and whom he waited for at the exact place where the boat landed. However, the detainee claims that he knew the landing site because he was waiting for some of his relatives who were traveling on said boat, something that could not be verified as the immigrants lacked documentation.
