The Víctor Fernández Gopar “El Salinero” Theater will host the performance, for the first time in Lanzarote, of José Saramago's play “The Night”, set in the newsroom of a Portuguese newspaper during the Carnation Revolution.

The play, one of the few written by the Portuguese Nobel Prize winner, can be seen on May 6 and 7, both days at 8:00 p.m. This staging of “The Night” is based on the version made by Eugenio Arredondo, under the direction of Joaquín Vida and with the production of the Lanzarote theater company Trama2 Producciones.

The cast is made up of Salvador Leal, Germán Barrios, Begoña Cedrés, Nisa Montelongo. Alby Robayna, Manuel Gil, Luis Pérez, Luis Junquera, Salvador Correa, Octavio González, Cristo García and Brais González.

From the Island Corporation they point out that the representation is part of the events of the centenary of the Portuguese writer (José Saramago, 1922-2022), in which the Cabildo de Lanzarote, the José Saramago Foundation, the Government of the Canary Islands and the City Council of Tías participate.

“The Night” is set in the newsroom of a Lisbon newspaper on the night of April 24 to 25, 1974. Against the background of censorship, the desire for freedom and ethical debates, editors and publishers argue and maintain conflictive relationships in the face of the first episodes of the Carnation Revolution, which would end the dictatorship of Marcello Caetano.

Written by José Saramago, this drama was originally released in Lisbon in 1979, five years after the end of the Salazar dictatorship. In 1996 the Spanish version was released in Granada, commissioned to the director Joaquín Vida, who is once again directing this staging faithful to the one made in 1996.

Tickets to see “The Night” cost 10 euros and can be purchased on the website of the Culture area of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, www.culturalanzarote.com. The work lasts approximately 75 minutes and is recommended for ages 14 and up.
