The government group of the Tías City Council, formed by PSOE, Lanzarote Avanza and Lanzarote en Pie-Sí Podemos, has welcomed and expressed its satisfaction with the initiation of the declaration of the hermitage of San Antonio Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in the category of Monument, “which will allow all its values to be preserved.”

The mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz, underlines the relevance of this property, which is currently used as an exhibition hall and cultural events, but which dates from the 17th century and was initially used to store the cereals that were planted in the area, as a tomato warehouse and as a barracks for the soldiers who participated in the Cuban War of Independence.

“It is an emblematic building both in its historical, architectural and patrimonial aspect. In the municipality we are very proud to have a property with so much charm and so many values, so we all ensure its protection and conservation,” declares the highest authority of the consistory.

It was declared BIC in the 90s but the file expired

The hermitage of San Antonio was already declared BIC in the 90s, but its file expired in 2000. It is included in the Protection Catalog of Architectural and Monumental Heritage of the Island Plan of Territorial Planning of Lanzarote and is included in the Protection Catalog of the Historical-Artistic Heritage of the General Plan of Ordering of Tías.

The Cabildo of Lanzarote, at the request of the Historical Heritage Service, again initiated the file to declare the hermitage an Asset of Cultural Interest in the category of Monument and this announcement was published yesterday by the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC).

According to this publication, for the BIC the interventions to be carried out will be limited to those of Investigation, Valorization, Maintenance, Conservation, Consolidation and Restoration in accordance with the definition given in Law 11/2019, of April 25, on Cultural Heritage of the Canary Islands. Intervention criteria are also established in the protection environment.
