The CIC El Almacén hosted this Wednesday the presentation Destiladera. Lanzarote Revealed, a community film project that recovers family films from the 20th century. This initiative seeks to activate memory and open conversations in the present about the history of Lanzarote and La Graciosa.

The details of this initiative, organized by the Tenique Cultural association with the sponsorship of the Cabildo de Lanzarote and the seven town councils, have been broken down at a press conference by the Minister of Culture, Jesús Machín Tavío, who highlighted that "Destiladera not only rescues valuable fragments of our audiovisual memory, but also promotes citizen participation in the preservation of our heritage. This project demonstrates that culture is built from the collective, from those intimate looks that are now transformed into a common legacy."

For his part, Javier Fuentes, director of Tenique Cultural, thanked the sponsors for their support of a cultural project that is consolidating and fulfilling its community objectives. "It's not just about looking at the past. It's about looking at each other. And making the archive a meeting space," Fuentes commented.

Between May 21 and 31, the most emblematic corners of Lanzarote will once again turn on their projector. In each municipality, a place with history will host a screening open to the public. The screen will show the film "They Love Water", the montage created by the filmmaker Dailo Barco from domestic materials filmed between the 60s and 90s by anonymous people from the island and rescued by the Tenique Cultural association.

But Destiladera is not just a film. It is a collective process. Each session will become a living forum: citizens of each municipality will be invited to share their views on the issues that run through the images, giving rise to open dialogues with the public. Cinema mixes with words, and the archive with life.

The collective memory

This year, the project places special emphasis on its pedagogical and intergenerational dimension, with the realization of sessions in educational centers and a screening in a senior center, organized in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare. In these spaces, the archive acts as a tool to work on memory, recognition and the link between generations, connecting young and old through images.

In addition to the impulse of the seven town councils and the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Destiladera is strengthened thanks to the support of entities that are part of the productive heart of the island: the association of artisan cheese factories AQUAL, the association SAT El Jable and the Vega de Yuco winery. Their collaboration will allow each evening to close with a shared enyesque, where the dialogue is accompanied by local flavors.
