The Timple House Museum of Teguise has hosted the presentation of the new museum of 'El Álamo', which will open its doors in 2027 in the city of San Antonio, Texas. The event was organized by the project director, Kate Rogers, and was attended by part of the technical team of the future museum, as well as the honorary consul of Spain in Texas, Steve Chiscano.
This new construction will cost "more than 550 million dollars" and will be divided into several floors, where a space will be completely dedicated to the Spanish presence in Texas, in which part of the history of the Canary Island families, mostly from Lanzarote, who founded the city around the 18th century will be represented.
The mayor of Teguise, Olivia Duque, shows her full support for the new museum. "The history of the Lanzarote families who founded the city of San Antonio, many of them from Teguise, will be present in the future museum. A space that will be visited by millions of people every year," she explains.
The project will consist of a comprehensive renovation and modernization plan of the historic complex of 'El Álamo', which includes the restoration of the building itself as well as other historical structures, the construction of a new museum and a visitor center dedicated to the history of Texas, the creation of a park and an adjacent square, and the improvement of various facilities, including accesses and parking.
For her part, the Councilor for Heritage of the City Council of Teguise, Mar Boronat, considers that the cultural alliance created between Teguise and San Antonio is "unbreakable" and they are pleased to be able to "help" from the institution.
'El Álamo' was an old Spanish mission that had a large Canary Island presence. It is also considered a symbol of American popular culture and a tourist attraction for San Antonio, which receives thousands of visitors every year. In 1731, several families from Lanzarote, along with others from the rest of the Canary Islands, arrived on the banks of the San Antonio River where they founded what is now one of the ten most important cities in the United States.
