Barrios Orquestados begins its summer concert season framed in the final stretch of the crowdfunding campaign Save Barrios Orquestados. "After a semester of uncertainty, 14 orchestras and 10 choirs made up of children and their families from the neighborhoods of the Canary Islands are moving forward," he said in a statement. More than 800 people are prepared to bring music to peripheral areas.
The program takes place during the month of June in the islands of Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Tenerife, successively, with the last concert coinciding with the closing of the fundraising campaign.
The Fuerteventura orchestra will inaugurate the concert series next Sunday, June 8, at 7:00 p.m., in the Antigua Auditorium, with the collaboration of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura and the Puerto del Rosario City Council.
After Fuerteventura, it will be the turn of Lanzarote in the Titerroy Municipal Pavilion on June 15 at 7:00 p.m.; it continues in the Juan Beltrán Sierra Pavilion of Gran Canaria on June 22 at 7:00 p.m., while the grand finale will be in the Juan Ríos Tejera Pavilion of Tenerife on June 29 at 7:00 p.m.
The summer tour is held, in most cases, in sports pavilions with the aim of bringing music and culture to the peripheral neighborhoods. To access the venue, a previous invitation is required.
The concert repertoire offers a selection of pieces that combine cultural diversity and scenic strength. The public will be able to enjoy works inspired by series and films, as well as the emblematic Ode to Joy by Beethoven and Cantares, by Joan Manuel Serrat, based on the poem by Antonio Machado.
Barrios Orquestados launched an urgent call to citizens, institutions and companies at the beginning of April to avoid the cessation of its activity, as a result of the fall in a significant part of the public aid received up to now. The news has reached the Parliament of the Canary Islands and the Congress of Deputies, evidencing unanimity among the parties in supporting stable financing for the project for the coming years.
Artists and different personalities from the world of culture, music, theater, science, etc., have shown their support: from the singer Ana Guerra, the singer-songwriter Aristides Moreno, as well as the influencer Javier Santaolalla and the current member of the Academy of the Oscars and composer from Tenerife, Diego Navarro.
One month before the end of the campaign, the initiative is approaching 50% of its goal with the hope of increasing this amount and remaining in operation. “Each contribution represents a note in this collective symphony that fights for equality and culture in the neighborhoods,” says José Brito, director of the project.
The fundraising campaign is active on the Gofundme platform and can also be accessed from the official Barrios Orquestados website.
