The First Section of the Provincial Court of Las Palmas will judge next Thursday in Gran Canaria two Moroccan citizens accused of skippering a boat from Morocco to Lanzarote.

According to the Prosecutor's Office's indictment, the defendants S.B. and M.N. allegedly "agreed" to charge "various" amounts of money to at least five migrants, in exchange for transferring them from the Alaouite country to the coasts of Lanzarote. All this, allegedly "knowing that they were violating the rules on entry into the national territory."

The Public Prosecutor's Office argues that the accused allegedly skippered the precarious vessel without any "maritime safety system", such as life jackets, water or food.

The boat arrived on the island on June 24, 2023, around 2:30 p.m., with 35 migrants inside.

According to the Public Prosecutor's Office, S.B.I. allegedly hit M.N. and caused damage to various parts of the body. These included the head, back, knee and left arm, as well as the forearm and right leg.

The Public Prosecutor's Office is asking for a sentence of eight years in prison for both, special disqualification from the right to passive suffrage during the term of the sentence and payment of costs for an alleged crime against the rights of foreign citizens.

While for the minor crime of injury he faces a fine of three months, with a daily fee of ten euros with subsidiary personal responsibility in case of non-payment.

Thus, the accused S,B, must compensate M.N. with the amount of 540 euros for the injuries caused.
