The Sixth Section of the Provincial Court of Las Palmas sentenced D.D., a Senegalese citizen, to three years and three months in prison for a crime against the rights of foreign citizens this Monday in Arrecife.

D.D. asked the Public Prosecutor to add to his indictment that "the accused is just another foreigner who wanted to come to Spain to achieve a better life." After that, he acknowledged that he agreed with other people, who have not been identified, to charge "various amounts of money" to two migrants who arrived in a small boat to Lanzarote on March 7.

This precarious boat departed from Morocco and a total of 42 people were traveling on it. D.D. drove the boat from Morocco to its arrival on the Island of Volcanoes. This boat "lacked any security system, as well as life jackets, food or water, endangering the lives of the migrants."

The confessed perpetrator of skippering the boat will face three years and three months in prison, compared to the eight initially requested by the Prosecutor's Office, and must pay the costs of the trial. In addition, the time he has already spent in provisional prison, since April of this year, will be deducted.
