The Sixth Section of the Provincial Court of Las Palmas will try next week in Arrecife a man accused of a continued crime of sexual abuse of a minor. The Prosecutor's Office is asking for 12 years in prison for him, in addition to other protection measures for the victim.
The hearing will be held next Wednesday, November 16, and the Public Prosecutor's Office has requested that it be behind closed doors, without allowing access to the press or other types of public, "in order to protect the privacy of the victim". This possibility is contemplated in the Criminal Procedure Law and in the Statute of the victim of the crime, although it is not applied in all cases. Depending on the circumstances of each case, the prosecutor assigned to the procedure assesses whether or not to make that request, and the Chamber is the one who makes the decision.
In addition, for the same reason, the Prosecutor's Office has decided not to provide the media with the qualification document, and has only confirmed the crime for which it accuses and the penalty it requests for the defendant.
