The Cabildo de Lanzarote hosted a working meeting last Monday, April 17 to plan the new school map of professional education on the island, whose offer will be expanded in the 2023/2024 academic year, as announced by the Island Government.

The meeting was attended by the president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, and the Minister and Deputy Minister of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands, Manuela Armas and María Dolores Rodríguez. Also attending were the island director of Education, Celeste Callero, the Cabildo councillor Myriam Barros and the president of the Chamber of Commerce of the island, José Valle, with part of his team.

"Not only will we have a wide range of vocational training on the island, but it will be more attractive than ever, offering new training cycles that have not been taught in the archipelago until now," Corujo stressed after the meeting.

The president also expressed "her support and interest" in actions aimed at qualifying students for their future jobs and expanding their integration into the labour market, she reports. "The relationship between the education system and local businesses is fundamental for the socio-economic progress of the island, in a context of innovation and highly positive synergy," she said.

The aim of the call, as was "the planning of a training offer that responds to the needs of the productive sectors of Lanzarote society and the business demand and that, at the same time, is attractive to students, due to its innovative content and its employability", stresses Armas.

"Expanding the educational offer of FP is investing in the future of our young people and our economy, as this training allows students to develop skills and competences relevant to meet the demands of the current labour market," said Barros.

The "intention of the Government of the Canary Islands to move forward in the drafting of the construction project of an FP centre on a plot in the neighbourhood of Maneje (Arrecife)" was presented, comments the Cabildo, in addition, for which "there is a budget", they add.

Manuela Armas, also showed "her inclination to the specialisation by families of the centres that teach these subjects, so that students have the possibility to progress in their training to the higher level without having to change islands". In addition, she defended "the importance of the basic level training cycle, due to its capacity to increase student motivation, reduce early school leaving and increase qualification rates".

In addition, the planning for the next 2023-24 academic year, the newly implemented qualifications, the double qualifications and the specialisation courses were discussed. Also, the implementation for the first time on the island of the Higher Cycle of Sports Technician in Sailing. In addition, other qualifications such as Sociocultural and Tourist Animation or Pattern Making and Fashion will be added.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the CIFP Zonzamas, the CEO Playa Blanca; the IES Blas Cabrera; Las Maretas; Haría; Playa Honda; Teguise; Puerto del Carmen and Yaiza; the Pancho Lasso School and the Maritime-Fisheries Vocational Training Institute of Lanzarote, according to the Cabildo.
