Education creates two specialized teams for Canary students with high intellectual abilities

In the archipelago there are more than 1,500 students identified with high intellectual abilities in the different stages of the educational system

The Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports, led by Poli Suárez, has announced the launch of two new specialized teams for the attention of students with High Intellectual Abilities in the Canary Islands, a measure that responds to a historical demand from the educational community and that will begin to be developed initially through a pilot phaseCurrently, in the Canary Islands there are more than 1,500 male and female students identified with high intellectual abilities in the different stages of the educational system, from Early Childhood Education to High School. With the creation of these teams, of provincial scope, the aim is to offer a specialized and continuous response to these students, as well as to their families and the teachers of the educational centersThe Director General of Teaching, Inclusion and Innovation, David Pablos, explained that "one of the main objectives we set at the beginning of the legislature was to improve the attention to students with high intellectual abilities and, over these two and a half academic years, we have promoted different projects in this line, not only working directly with the students, but also offering training and support to teachers and families".In this regard, he pointed out that "with the creation of this new team, we aim to add specialized personnel who will advise and accompany, not only in the tasks of **detection**, but fundamentally in the **care** of students once assessed, responding to a historical demand and reinforcing a clear commitment by the Ministry for support for this profile and for the pursuit of educational **excellence** in public schools".The new teams will be formed by Educational Guidance professionals with accredited experience in advising and supporting students with high intellectual abilities. Their scope of action will range from Early Childhood Education to High School and they will carry out their work in coordination with educational centersAmong its main functions are **support for teaching staff and families**, **improvement of student identification processes**, and **guidance in the design of specific educational measures**, such as enrichment programs and curriculum flexibilityIn this area, the Ministry also works on updating detection procedures, with special attention to the **reduction of gender bias**, one of the factors that has historically conditioned the identification of these studentsThe implementation of these new teams will have a continuous monitoring and evaluation, with the aim of assessing their impact and advancing in more effective educational care focused not only on detection, but on the comprehensive support and development of students with high intellectual abilities in the Canary public school
