The arrival of foreign tourists to the Canary Islands increased by 38.9% in 2021 compared to the previous year, up to 5,258,701, although not even reaching half of the 13,147,009 that were added in 2019, the last year before Covid, according to data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

The main countries of origin of foreign visitors received in the islands in 2021 were the United Kingdom and Germany, adding in each of both cases an amount of 1.2 million travelers, according to the latest Statistics of Tourist Movements in Borders Frontur released by the INE.

Last year the archipelago was the third community of main destination by number of foreign visitors in Spain, being the first Balearic Islands, where more than 6.3 million arrived, and the second Catalonia, with about 5.8 million.

The expenditure of these travelers from abroad in the Canary Islands amounted to 7,184 million euros in 2021, 49% more than a year ago, although it was still less than half of the 16,866 million that those who visited the islands in 2019 spent, the last year before the coronavirus, even when the figure was 1.4% lower than in 2018.

Each of these travelers, on average, had an expenditure of 1,366 euros, 7.3% more than in 2020, and 152 euros per day, 1.6% more, and the average duration of their stay was 9 days, increasing 5.6% compared to the previous year.
