It is estimated that France will close 2023 with a tourist influx of between 78 and 82 million visitors, according to the French tourism news portal, L'Echo Touristique.
This represents a clear decline compared to the 90 million tourists who visited France in 2019. In contrast, Spain plans to reach 85 million travelers this year, with some scenarios even higher.
However, tourism spending in France will continue to be higher, as it is visited by many more tourists from Japan, South America, Southeast Asia, and the United States, whose spending level is much higher.
Spain also has visitors from these regions, but it has a much higher weight in its tourist mix of Europeans who travel for sun and beach and spend much less at the destination.
A large part of the fall in tourism in France is due to the fact that arrivals from China have not yet normalized.
