In the 90s of the last century, Lanzarote received around half a million Germans every year, according to statistics from the island's Data Center.
A figure that has been deflating over the years. In 2023, arrivals from Germany amounted to 305,208.
The work of SPEL in Germany managed in 2024 to increase the figures to almost 350,000 Germans that year, although still far from those of past decades.
To make matters worse, in the last winter, the preferred time for Germans to visit the Canary Islands, Lanzarote lost one in four German tourists compared to the previous winter.
Meanwhile, in Fuerteventura, German tourism continues to increase and already accounts for 32% of all tourists received by the island. In 2024, just over 800,000 people arrived from Germany to the island of Majorera.
In Lanzarote, tourism from Germany currently accounts for 10.2% of the total. In 1999, it exceeded 30% of all international tourists (excluding domestic tourism).
The connectivity of Lanzarote with Germany is not trivial. It amounts to 20 weekly flights, three more than last summer, and includes the airports of Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne-Bonn, Hanover, and Stuttgart, with a capacity of more than 3,700 passengers per week.
However, the connectivity of Fuerteventura is better, as it not only includes the cities mentioned above but also allows flying from the capital, Berlin, as well as from Bremen and Dresden.
This improvement in Majorera's connectivity is partly due to the recent incorporation of the airline Sundair, which offers flights to Berlin and Bremen.
In addition to having connections with more airports in Germany, Fuerteventura has also historically had a greater presence of German tour operators, unlike Lanzarote, which stands out for British, Irish, and increasingly French tour operators.
According to sources from SPEL, the German market is the most dependent on tour operation, which has its own accommodation groups.
In terms of spending, each German tourist who visits Lanzarote spends an average of 1,730 euros, while in Fuerteventura, it rises to 1,628 euros.
In contrast, British tourism, which prefers Lanzarote and already accounts for more than half of the island's tourist market, spends a total of 1,462 euros per person and trip on the island of Conejera. In Fuerteventura, their spending rises to 1,394 euros.
