Social innovation can become a powerful tool to address some of the major health and social challenges associated with the aging of the population in the Canary Islands.
With this premise, Little Challenge is born, an intergenerational platform driven by SPARKLING TECH SOLUTIONS, S.L. that will use artificial intelligence, cultural content, and participatory dynamics to reduce unwanted loneliness and contribute to preventing cognitive decline in the elderly.
The project has been selected within the call for grants for social innovation from the Canary Agency for Research, Innovation and Information Society (ACIISI), which will finance nine transformative initiatives in the Canary Islands between 2026 and 2027 with a global investment of close to 900,000 euros. Little Challenge will receive a subsidy of 100,000 euros, covering 100% of its eligible budget.
A virtual assistant to accompany, stimulate, and connect
The proposal combines technology and humanization through a virtual cognitive assistant designed to interact with the elderly in a close and personalized way. Through conversations, adapted challenges, and mental stimulation activities, the platform aims to promote active memory, cognitive training, and emotional well-being.
But the differential value of Little Challenge goes beyond technology. The initiative incorporates a cultural and community dimension that will allow for the collection and digitization of stories, experiences, traditions, and knowledge passed down by the elderly, turning them into a living repository of the intangible heritage of the Canary Islands.
In this way, users not only participate in cognitive stimulation activities but also become protagonists in the conservation of the cultural identity of the archipelago.
Preserving the collective memory of the Canary Islands
Family stories, popular customs, traditional games, linguistic expressions, or ways of life linked to each island can be integrated into the platform to be shared with new generations.
This approach turns the elderly into active agents of the innovation process, fostering the exchange of knowledge between generations and reinforcing their sense of usefulness and belonging to the community.
The combination of intelligent empathetic artificial intelligence, gamification, and cultural heritage will allow the creation of interactive experiences that favor participation and mutual learning, strengthening social bonds in a context marked by the aging population and the increase in unwanted loneliness.
Little Challenge will be developed between March 2, 2026, and April 30, 2027, a period during which this technological solution aimed at improving the quality of life of the elderly in the Canary Islands will be validated.
The initiative is part of the nine projects selected by ACIISI to address social challenges through innovative solutions in areas such as digital inclusion, citizen participation, sustainability, or the integration of vulnerable groups. As highlighted by the Minister of Universities, Science, Innovation, and Culture, Migdalia Machín, these grants support projects capable of providing creative solutions to real problems and demonstrating how innovation can improve people's lives and strengthen social cohesion in the Canary Islands.
With Little Challenge, social innovation puts technology at the service of people to build bridges between generations, combat isolation, and ensure that the memory and traditions of the Canary Islands remain alive in the future.
