Lanzarote has participated in the Fiets en Wandelbeurs fair, specializing in cycle tourism and hiking, which is being held this weekend in Ghent, Belgium. This is a meeting that fans attend to learn about the offer of vacation destinations where they can practice these sports, included in the active tourism segment.
The public of this fair, both Belgian and from neighboring countries, is characterized by their interest in active vacations and their high purchasing power. The island receives 50,000 Belgian tourists every year. 36.6% practice hiking in the destination, 14 points above the average of other markets, which stands at 22.5%, while 4.3% opt for the cycle tourism option.
The Minister of Tourism, Yaiza Castilla, has highlighted that "cycling and hiking are perfectly identified in our promotion strategy since they are alternative activities to sun and beach".
Canary Islands has had six counters at the Turespaña stand at this fair. In addition to Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma and La Gomera have participated.
According to Frontur data from 2021, Belgium occupies the seventh position in the ranking of island markets, with 251,126 tourists.
