The president and Tourism Councilor of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, presided this Wednesday at the presentation of the Sustainable Development Goals Platform 'Biosphere Sustainable'. Accompanied by the CEO of the Lanzarote Foreign Promotion Society (SPEL)-Turismo Lanzarote, Héctor Fernández, both witnessed the implementation of a tool that will allow measuring the management of tourism sustainability on the Island in real time.

At the event, held at the Casa de los Volcanes in Jameos del Agua, Dolores Corujo highlighted that Lanzarote is the first destination worldwide to join the 'Biosphere Sustainable' Platform and encouraged companies of all types, directly or indirectly linked to tourism, to join this online platform for the sustainability management of our destination.

The president stressed the need to fight against one of the main problems worldwide today, such as global warming. "This task cannot wait, and demands that public authorities and the private sector do our homework, and that we act in a coordinated manner," she defended.

In this regard, the president pointed out that this tool offers us useful answers to delve into a sustainable tourism development model, allowing us to measure the state of the island in the field of sustainability in real time. "If we take into account that nine out of 10 travelers look for sustainable services and companies, the need to have such a tool is justified by itself," she indicated.

Students from the School of Tourism and IES Zonzamas also attended the event as guests.

The great challenge: reverse and stop climate change

Among the speakers at the presentation, the Canarian climate advisor and former president of AEGEE-Europe and the European Youth Forum, Luis Alvarado, warned that the great challenge of this generation is to reverse and stop climate change and highlighted Lanzarote's conditions to implement policies focused on it, as well as the work it is doing in the search for sustainability in different areas.

This tool not only acts as a repository and database to share qualitative and quantitative information on all the actions they develop between all departments and areas of the destination, but also to analyze their final impact or final results in the destination, based on these actions carried out.

These actions are directly connected to the 169 goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, which develops what to do to achieve the objectives of the 2030 Horizon, grouping a variable number of activities that are related to each other to carry them out from the different areas of destination management.

This tool will allow the destination manager, with the integration of the different areas and departments of the same, to jointly develop and work on an Action Plan with which to achieve the identified objectives according to the sustainable efforts already implemented and identified in the destination.
