The arrival of German tourists to Lanzarote continues to fall. This August, 13,890 tourists arrived from Germany, 3.2% less than arrived in the same month of last year.

The data is more worrying if we compare the arrivals with those registered in August of 2019. With respect to the data prior to the pandemic, German tourism has fallen by 26%. In the pre-pandemic August, 22,303 people arrived in Lanzarote.

The data has been published by HolidayCheck, a platform that sells packages from more than 51 tour operators in German-speaking source markets.

Lanzarote is the Canary Island where tourism from Germany has decreased the most after La Palma, which is a particular case due to the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano. On the beautiful island, German tourism fell by 61% compared to 2019.

In Tenerife, the fall since 2019 is 19.4%, in Gran Canaria 3.5% and in Fuerteventura 1.5%.

Booking independently favors other destinations

Some experts point out that the decrease in travelers by air from Germany is due to the fact that its citizens are increasingly choosing to travel less through tour operators, who control most of the German tourist flows to Lanzarote.

The growing trend in Germany of preferring independent travel to organized travel means that more and more Germans are opting for other destinations.

So far this year, the internet searches carried out from Germany to find a hotel in Turkey were the most numerous (approximately 24 million searches) and also increased by 15% annually, according to HolidayCheck data.
