For the first time in its history, the Canary Islands has chained a full year receiving more than one million tourists from other countries per month and is on track to surpass its record of annual visitor influx, which dates back to 2017, when 14.21 million foreigners spent their holidays on the islands.
According to the Survey of Tourist Movements at Borders (Frontur) published this Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics, only in August 1.16 million foreign tourists traveled to the Canary Islands, 9.67% more than in the same month of 2023, which already leaves the accumulated of the year at 9.86 million tourists, 10.25% more.
That last figure, the accumulated of eight months, already exceeds the 2023 data by almost one million tourists on the same date, when 8.49 million were counted, and is half a million above the records of 2017, the record year, which ended August with 9.29 million.
These figures have been reached, among other reasons, because for the first time in history the first eight months of the year have registered inflows of foreign tourists to the Canary Islands above one million people, when in previous years May or June (or both months) closed with amounts between 800,000 and 900,000.
This year, May and June have continued to be the weakest months of the year for the sector in the islands, but they have ended with 1,037,701 and 1,045,520 foreign tourists, respectively.
In reality, the Canary Islands has been adding tourists from million to million every month since July 2023, fourteen months in a row, something unprecedented in the sector's statistics in the islands.
In parallel, tourist spending in the Canary Islands also breaks records: in August it stood at 1,953.95 million euros, 14% more than in 2023. It is the highest in history for a summer month (the high season in the Canary Islands is concentrated in autumn and winter).
In the first eight months of the year, foreign tourists have spent 14.97 million euros on their holidays in the Canary Islands, 14.41% more, according to INE data.
Broken down in detail, each tourist spent a total of 1,676 euros on their trip to the Canary Islands in August, 3.96% more, with an average of 200 euros per day, 6.61% more.
However, they cut their average length of stay by 2.49% on the islands, which was 8.39 days.
