The Government of the Canary Islands will grant aid of 24.5 million euros to tourist establishments on the islands to contribute to their energy efficiency, as explained by Yaiza Castilla, Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce.
Tourism will launch competitive subsidies in the coming weeks to contribute to the improvement of energy efficiency of tourist accommodation establishments (15.5 million), and non-accommodation establishments (nine million). The Minister has announced that aid will also be granted for the same purposes for four million euros to the commercial sector, as reported by the hosteltur news portal.
The aid will be charged to the 332 million euros from the Next Generation funds that Tourism of the Canary Islands has for the period 2021-2026.
The strategic route for the transformation of the Canary Islands tourism model, agreed in 2021 by the regional Executive with the sector, includes the challenge of having "a Canary Islands tourism more committed to the reduction of carbon emissions linked to its activity and, in general, with environmental sustainability in a more global conception."
With this objective, the Ministry of Tourism plans to present on October 24, in Lanzarote, the "Master Plan for Climate Action of the Tourist Destination Canary Islands", which establishes the bases "of the new impulse of the trip to decarbonization that administrations and companies must continue and accelerate", he added.
On October 24, the Ministry of Tourism will also formalize its adherence, together with representative entities of the business sector, to the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action, which proposes to reduce the carbon footprint of the Canary Islands by 50% in 2030.
