The Government of the Balearic Islands has demanded that the Central Government order the public company Aena to stop the increase in flights to the islands' airports in high season, because the tourist capacity of the archipelago has reached its "maximum limit".

The spokesman for the regional government, Antoni Costa, has remarked that the powers to regulate "the main gateway to the Balearic Islands" lie with the state government, which he has urged to limit airport 'slots' in the three island airports to those granted in the months of greatest influx in 2024.

"It is not advisable to increase the capacity of the airports in high season", Costa remarked, who pointed out that the Govern will continue to demand from the Government the co-management of the airports to participate in Aena's strategy.

Therefore, the spokesman has confirmed, the PP will support in the Parliament the initiatives in favor of claiming the shared management of the airports.

However, he has avoided pronouncing in the same sense regarding what the popular group will do in the face of similar proposals that may be formulated in Congress.

Costa has criticised the "hypocrisy" of the Balearic PSOE and Més per Mallorca, who ask the Govern for measures against tourist saturation but "look the other way" with respect to Aena, which "controls the growing 'slots'" of the archipelago's airports.

He insisted that the position of the PP's Govern is that the Balearic Islands has reached its limit of visitor capacity in the summer months, but is not in favour of the decrease demanded by the left.
