Canary Islands has received 10.9 million foreign tourists until September, 10% more than the same period of 2023, which places the islands as the third receiving region of international visitors, concentrating 14.9% of all those who arrived in the last nine months to the country.
Spain was the destination chosen by more than 73.9 million foreign tourists in the first nine months of the year, 10.9% more than in the same period of 2023 (66.64 million) and a record number of arrivals, according to data released this Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
International tourists spent 99,086 million euros in Spain between January and September, 16.9% more in year-on-year rate and also a record figure in the historical series. Of those almost 100,000 million, more than 16,500 were spent in the Canary Islands, 13.84% more.
In September alone, 9.6 million international tourists arrived in Spain, 9.1% more, and spent 12,615 million, 12.7% more than in the same month last year.
By destination regions of these travelers, Catalonia is at the head with 21.4% of total arrivals. It is followed, in this order, by Balearic Islands (18%), Canary Islands (14.9%) and Andalusia (14.6%).

Regarding the accumulated expenses by non-resident travelers, between January and September they disbursed 14,361 million more than in the same period of 2023 and already approaches one hundred billion in total.
In September, the average expenditure per tourist was 1,315 euros, with an increase in year-on-year rate of 3.3%, while the average daily expenditure grew by 3.8%, up to 195 euros per person.
In this month of the end of summer, the main issuing countries in terms of spending were United Kingdom (19.5% of the total), Germany (13%) and France (8.1%).
Tourists residing in the United Kingdom increased their disbursements in Spain by 9.3% in September compared to the same month of 2023; those from Germany spent 8.6% more and those from France, 26.1%.
By items and in September, spending on activities was the main reason for opening wallets, with 19.8% of the total (9.7% more in year-on-year rate), followed by international transport (not included in tourist package) and in tourist package, with 19.6% and 19.1% of the total, respectively. The first increased by 16.2% and the second, by 8.2%.
Also in September, 68.9% of the total expenditure was made by tourists who stayed in hotel accommodation (10.1% more), while expenditure in non-market accommodation grew by 27.2%.
