The President of the Canary Islands Government, Ángel Víctor Torres, announced this Thursday the approval of the authorization of 21.5 million euros to build 134 protected public promotion homes in the neighborhood of Maneje, in Arrecife.

At the proposal of the Minister of Public Works, Transport and Housing, Sebastián Franquis, the Governing Council held this morning has authorized the expenditure to start the contracting of the works. In addition, as Ángel Víctor Torres has made known through his official Twitter account, the works could begin in the summer.

These will be "the first homes that the Government of the Canary Islands builds in Lanzarote in the last three decades." Specifically, 27 years have passed since the last time the regional Executive built social housing in Lanzarote.

With the authorization, the procedure to contract the works by the Canary Housing Institute (ICAVI) is launched, a contract that is expected to be published this month or early May in order for the works to be underway this summer.

These 134 homes are part of a batch of 201 new houses that will be built in the Maneje area, and will be distributed in two adjoining buildings of 67 properties each located on a plot of land ceded in 2020 by the Arrecife City Council to ICAVI.

In this sense, the Minister Sebastián Franquis stated that, "construction in housing strengthens the economy and social cohesion and corrects inequality" and added that, "the implementation of a housing policy that did not exist in the past will involve investing more than 664 million euros until 2025, which will mean supplying the public park with more than 6,900 protected public promotion homes."

The construction of each of the two buildings will be around 10 million euros and the Ministry has already invested an item of 713,016 euros in the drafting of projects.

The plots where these three buildings will be built are also around 2,540 square meters each. It is estimated that the duration of the works will be 20 months, so the homes could be completed and ready to be delivered in the spring of 2025.

ICAVI estimates that the construction cost of these first two buildings will be 19,614,474 euros, although the expenditure is always authorized with 10% more funds in reserve to settle the work and cope with possible modifications.

Distribution of homes

The projected homes will be 10% one-bedroom, 20% two-bedroom, 60% three-bedroom, and another 10% four-bedroom. Also, within the corresponding quotas of two and three bedrooms are six homes for people with reduced mobility and three supervised homes of five bedrooms. All homes have a parking space and a storage room located in the corresponding basements of each of the buildings.

The third building, also of 67 properties and with which the batch of 201 is completed, is still in the process of supervision by the Intervention service, so ICAVI is confident that it will be able to tender its works in the summer.
