Lanzarote already has 10,031 vacation homes registered in the General Tourism Registry, an indispensable requirement to be able to carry out the activity in the archipelago. Despite this, the Government of the Canary Islands continues to rule out applying a moratorium on tourist rentals.
In this sense, the Canary Islands Vacation Rental Association (ASCAV) has asked the Canary Islands Parliament, through more than 6,000 signatures and 685 writings, to approve an "urgent moratorium" for one year to negotiate a vacation home bill. For the moment, the Ministry of Tourism is still working on its own law, whose first draft generated much controversy, but rules out limiting new registrations until this rule is approved.
Since June 2023, when the Cátedra de Turismo Caja Canarias-Ashotel of the University of La Laguna reported on the first evolution of registrations in the vacation market, registrations have grown by 4,833 (92% more). Compared to just one year ago, since April 2024, 2,140 new homes have been added to the vacation rental market (an increase of 27.1%).
By municipalities, Yaiza has 2,825 registered tourist homes; in second position, Tías, with 2,675; Teguise, with 2,021; Arrecife; 1,100; Haría, 553; San Bartolomé, 538; and finally, Tinajo, 318.
Currently, Lanzarote has the most expensive rental price in the Canary Islands, according to data from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda and collected in the draft of the Island Plan for Land Management of Lanzarote. In this sense, the areas where rental prices are most expensive coincide with the most touristy municipalities and where there are more vacation homes: Yaiza, Teguise and Tías.
