Last Wednesday, the Minister of Public Works, Transport and Housing of the Government of the Canary Islands, Sebastián Franquis, presented a subsidy that will be aimed at residential rehabilitation.

This aid, which will be 7,640,000 euros and may reach up to 20,000 euros per home, will include both owners of an individual home and building communities.

The Minister pointed out that the objective of these aids is to "improve the energy efficiency of residential buildings." The Minister also stressed that these aid routes are of great relevance to the Canary Islands, since "the housing stock is very old and, in many cases, neighbors cannot afford it due to lack of resources."

13 technical offices will be created throughout the Canary Islands to offer technical assistance

To start the project, which requires a prior technical project, up to 13 technical rehabilitation offices will be created throughout the archipelago to offer technical assistance to those who need it. "We have trained personnel on each of the islands in our community, so that interested people can go to the technical offices to find out and ask for all the necessary advice to be able to obtain this aid," said Franquis.

Franquis also pointed out that this process would mean a lower cost of the energy consumed and that it would mean a "higher quality of life in homes."

This line of aid, immersed in the Rehabilitation Program for the Economic and Social Recovery of Residential Environments, plans to improve the living standards of approximately 1,000 homes.

In the other line of aid, the preparation of rehabilitation projects for homes or buildings is subsidized with a maximum cost of 30,000 euros.

Job creation

The launch of this new line of aid for rehabilitation will also allow job creation, the Minister assured that the creation of 3,000 jobs is expected, both directly and indirectly.

The Ministry has created a specific website that offers a practical guide with the steps to follow and informs about the addresses of the technical offices to receive advice.

The submission period will be open until September 15, 2023 or the exhaustion of the budget credit, said request may be submitted electronically or in person at the ICAVI.

This line of aid is added to other subsidies managed by the Ministry with funds from the EU's transformation and resilience plan. The Council of Ministers of the Government of Spain recently approved a subsidy to the Canary Islands of more than 86 million euros for the rehabilitation of homes.
