The unemployment rate rose in October in Lanzarote by 2.7%, which is equivalent to 218 more people on the unemployment lists, according to the Canary Islands Employment Observatory (OBECAN) published this Friday.
The total number of unemployed on the island is 8,272 people. A month ago there were 8,054, but twelve months ago 9,338 unemployed were counted, so the decrease in the last year is equivalent to 11.4%.
Unemployment rises by the same percentage for men and women (2.7%), but it affects young people more. The youth unemployment rate grows by 4.7%.
Regarding the level of education, unemployment falls sharply, by 8.1%, among university students, which is the only population group that experiences a decrease in unemployment on the island.
Unemployment rises in all municipalities except Tinajo and Yaiza
By municipalities, Tinajo and Yaiza are the only ones where unemployment has decreased in October.
In Tinajo, unemployment has fallen by 4.5%, which is equivalent to 16 fewer people on the unemployment lists. The total number of unemployed in Tinajo amounts to 340 people.
Yaiza has experienced a decrease of 1.7%, which means 10 fewer people in unemployment. Its total number of unemployed stands at 582 citizens.
On the other hand, unemployment has increased in October in the rest of the municipalities. In percentage terms, it has increased especially in Haría and San Bartolomé, where it has done so by 6.5% and 6% respectively.
Thus, Haría increases its unemployment lists by 20 people, bringing its total of unemployed to 327. In San Bartolomé there have been 54 more people, so its total of unemployed rises to 961 people.
In absolute numbers, Arrecife is the municipality where the number of unemployed increases the most, which in percentage terms is equivalent to 3.7%. There are 149 more people on the unemployment lists, bringing the capital's total to 4,212 unemployed.
In Teguise and Tías there have been slight increases in unemployment, of 0.9% and 1.5% respectively. Thus, Teguise adds 9 unemployed to a total of 1,031 people and Tías, 12, to a total of 819 unemployed.
