The unemployment rate in Lanzarote has fallen three points in the second quarter, to 17.3%, but continues to exceed the national average of 12.48%, according to the Active Population Survey (EPA), collected by the Lanzarote Data Center.
The unemployment figure in the first three months of the year was 20.21% and if compared with the same period of 2021, the difference is much greater, since in the second quarter of 2021 the figure was 27.67%, with a difference of 10 points.
It should be noted that Lanzarote has the second lowest unemployment rate in the Canary Islands, behind only Fuerteventura with 16.57%. It is followed by Tenerife with 17.33%, La Palma with 18.02%, Gran Canaria with 18.38%, La Gomera with 18.81% and, finally, El Hierro with 19.56%.
In addition, the island also manages to improve the average figure for the archipelago, which stands at around 17.76% in the months of April, May and June. Regarding the profile of the unemployed, it is important to mention that women continue to accumulate a higher percentage, with 18.33% compared to 16.38% for men.
Activity and employment rates rise
With regard to activity and employment rates, Lanzarote also shows positive data compared to the other islands. Both rise again in the second quarter after a slight fall in the first.
Specifically, Lanzarote has an activity rate of 62.25%, improving the Canary Islands figure of 59.17%. Only Fuerteventura exceeds the figure with 63.17%. Men also have a higher activity rate, 65.86% and women 58.64%.
In addition, Lanzarote has an employment rate of 51.49%, surpassed by the neighboring island, once again, with 52.59%. The Canary Islands average is 48.66% and, as with the activity rate, men once again occupy the highest percentage, with 55%, compared to 47.89% for women.
