Unemployment continues to fall on the island of Lanzarote, with 9,638 unemployed in June, which represents a reduction of 217 people in just one month, according to the latest report from the Canary Islands Employment Observatory (OBECAN), collected by the Lanzarote Data Center.
Specifically, the number of unemployed has fallen by 2.2% compared to May, when there were 9,855 unemployed, and if compared to the beginning of the year, the figure decreases by more than 2,000 people, since in the month of January 11,663 were registered. In addition, this decrease is even more pronounced if compared to June 2021, since at that time there were 19,282 unemployed, 50% more.
By zones, the number of job seekers has decreased in all municipalities, except in Haría, where it rises by 1.8% to reach a figure of 332 unemployed. For its part, Arrecife continues to be the municipality with the most people registered, with 5,055, followed by Teguise with 1,085, San Bartolomé with 1,061, Tías with 1,023, Yaiza with 716, and finally, Tinajo with 366. The most pronounced monthly drops have occurred in Tinajo and Yaiza, with a decrease of 7.6% and 7.9% respectively, since May.
Women and those over 45 years of age, those with the highest unemployment
Regarding the profile of unemployed people, more than half (5,614) were women and 4,024 men, mainly over 45 years of age 59.33%. Meanwhile, young people are the ones with the least unemployment, since only 4% of the total are job seekers, followed by people between 25 and 44 years old, who occupy 36.49%.
Likewise, it should be noted that 60% were long-term unemployed, and if their educational level and studies are taken into account, 61.07% had only completed primary education, 30.4% secondary education, 4.4% university studies and 3.97% vocational training.
With regard to the economic sector, the services sector continues to accumulate the bulk of unemployed people, with 46% of the total (4,189 unemployed), followed by hospitality with 24% (2,144 unemployed) and commerce with 17% (1,547 unemployed). For its part, construction brings together 9% with 793 unemployed, followed by industry with 3% (250) and agriculture with 1% (97).
