Unemployment has risen again in Lanzarote, which closed October with 17,975 unemployed, the worst figure recorded so far this year. Specifically, the island ended the month with 927 more unemployed than in September, which represents an increase of 5.4%, according to figures from the Canarian Employment Observatory published in the Cabildo's Data Center.
In addition, Lanzarote has 57.9% more unemployed than a year ago. In October 2019, there were 11,384 unemployed on the island.
Lanzarote began 2020 with 11,317 unemployed, but after the start of the Covid pandemic, in March it already had 12,713 unemployed. A figure that continued to increase in the following months, reaching 15,961 unemployed in April, 16,781 unemployed in May, and 17,381 unemployed in June.
In July there was a slight improvement in the figures, which fell to 17,081 unemployed, and in August they fell to 16,937. However, in September unemployment rose again on the island, reaching 17,048 people, and a month later it has reached almost 18,000.
In the Canary Islands as a whole, unemployment grew by more than 8,200 people in October, reaching a total of 262,487 people, which represents an increase of 3.23% compared to the previous month and 24.92% compared to October 2019. Unemployment has also rebounded in Spain as a whole, adding 49,558 unemployed, which represents an increase of 1.3% compared to September and almost 650,000 more unemployed than a year ago.
