Unemployment has decreased by 1.5% in Lanzarote in the last month. Thus, November closed with 7,461 people in a situation of unemployment, compared to 7,578 in October, according to figures from the Canary Islands Employment Observatory (OBECAN), published by the Lanzarote Data Center.
Also, unemployment decreased by 7.1% between November 2023 and the same month of 2024. In the eleventh month of last year, there were 8,033 unemployed people on the island of Lanzarote, 572 more than at present.
Unemployment by municipality
By municipality, Arrecife is the one with the most unemployed, with a total of 3,732 people in a situation of unemployment (87 less compared to October).
The second municipality on the island with the most unemployed is Teguise, with 893 unemployed, where unemployment grew by 19 people compared to the previous month. Meanwhile, San Bartolomé registered 848 people unemployed, 21 less.
In the case of Tías, there are 784 unemployed people, 33 less than in October. In Yaiza there are a total of 555 unemployed, two less than in the previous month; in Tinajo a total of 338, which is 27 more than in October; and in Haría, there are 311 unemployed, 24 less than in the previous month.
More than half of the unemployed are women
Unemployment affects women more than men in Lanzarote. Specifically, 56.5% of the people in a situation of unemployment were women. In total, 4,216 women are unemployed on the island, compared to 3,245 men who do not have a job.
Also, unemployment does not affect all people equally and harms people over 50 years of age more. Among the population over 50 years of age, there are a total of 3,685 unemployed. In this case, nearly two out of ten unemployed are over 50 years of age.
By economic sectors, commerce has 1,243 unemployed, hospitality has 1,778 and the rest of the services have 3,283. In total, the services sector has 6,304 unemployed people on the island of Lanzarote, that is, 84% of the total.
