Lanzarote recorded the highest tourist occupancy since the beginning of the pandemic last September, reaching 65.98%. The figure even exceeded that of August, when it was 60.78%, although the same did not happen with turnover, which fell by 1.3 million euros.
In total, the island's hotel and non-hotel complexes earned 39,827,887 euros in September, compared to the 41,176,915 euros they had reached in August, due to the fact that prices had increased that month. Specifically, the average price per room or apartment was 97.6 euros per night in August and 87.4 euros in September.
Despite the radical change with respect to last year 2020 -when occupancy in September was 23.29%, with total revenues of just over 7.4 million euros-, the figures still do not reach those before the Covid-19 crisis, which is what is expected to happen during the next winter season. For the time being, occupancy in September was 22 points below that of the same month in 2019, when it reached 87.19%, with a turnover of 63 million euros.
The places offered in the month of September of this year were a total of 56,002, still far from the 71,850 offered in the same month of 2019. And, although 165 establishments have already opened their doors (67 hotels and 98 non-hotel complexes), until the month of September there were almost a hundred that had not yet recovered their activity. In this case, the majority of those that remain closed are non-hotel establishments, since of the hotels, there are only 10 less open than two years ago.
Fewer travelers and higher prices
In reference to the number of travelers who stayed in hotels and non-hotel complexes last month, Lanzarote received 154,730 travelers in September, a difference of more than 100,000 compared to September 2019, when a total of 255,690 stayed.
Regarding the average rate, it has increased with respect to September of that year prior to the pandemic, when almost 5 euros less per day was charged per room or apartment. In the case of hotels, the average price last September was 99.39 euros per day, and in non-hotel complexes 56.88.
Regarding employment, for the moment more than 3,000 jobs in the sector have not yet been recovered. Specifically, hotel and non-hotel establishments employed 10,707 people in September 2019, while in September of this year there were 7,433 workers hired.
