The number of electric cars has quadrupled in the Canary Islands in three years

Hybrids have tripled, while the vehicle fleet in the Canary Islands is approaching two million vehicles

The number of 100% electric cars in the Canary Islands increased almost 400% between 2020 and 2023, from 1,917 units to a total of 9,023, according to the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (Istac) on the occasion of World Electric Vehicle Day.

The same trend can be seen in the evolution of the vehicle fleet in the islands in terms of hybrid vehicles, which numbered 10,966 in 2020 and 34,294 at the end of 2023; in plug-in hybrids, from 902 to 6,144; and in those powered by biofuel or LPG, from 1,800 to 4,303.

According to Istac data, in 2023 there were 19,129 vehicles in the Canary Islands with the environmental label of zero emissions; 41,903 with the ECO label; 811,895 with the C label; 409,748 with the B label; and 587,291 without a label.

The vehicle fleet in the Canary Islands reached historical figures last year: 1,908,241 vehicles.

3.3% use so-called alternative energies compared to a large majority of combustion vehicles: 65.5% have a gasoline engine (excluding hybrids) and 31.2% are diesel.

13.1% of the vehicle fleet in the Canary Islands is more than 30 years old; 6.6% are between 25 and 30 years old; 14.1% are between 20 and 25; 20.7% are between 15 and 20; 10.4% are between 10 and 15; 18.1% are between 5 and 10 years old; 9.7% are between 2 and 5; and 7.4% are less than two years old.
