The new maritime station in the expansion area of the port of Playa Blanca is committed to energy saving thanks to the innovative elements integrated into its structure.

In accordance with the climatic situation of the port of Playa Blanca (Yaiza), the construction of the new terminal has been proposed as a building with an envelope that significantly limits the demand for energy to cover the thermal well-being of its users. On the other hand, to take advantage of solar energy, the entire outdoor parking area is prepared for photovoltaic installation with solar panels on the roofs and, in addition, in its commitment to sustainability, it has chargers for electric vehicles.

"The bioclimatic design of this unique terminal and the application of passive construction systems on the facade achieve an ideal temperature efficiently, and even allow not using air conditioning systems," says Manuel Ortega, managing director of Puertos Canarios.

Another of the innovative elements of this new maritime terminal, which will be operational before the summer, is that all the materials used in the pillars, beams, floors and facade of the building are prefabricated reinforced concrete. As well as the interior dry partitions, so they are healthy, non-polluting and durable. The entire building is being built with a prefabricated high-strength concrete construction system, optimizing time and unnecessary material costs, as well as reducing subsequent maintenance.

Regarding the type of lighting, LED lights will be installed, whose main advantage is that they are respectful with the environment, by reducing the consumption of primary energy and therefore CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. In addition, they have low energy consumption, a longer lifespan than other types of lighting, take up less space, emit less heat, do not contain mercury and are compatible with photovoltaic installations.

And on the outside, as assured by the architect of the station Pedro Romera from the Romera y Ruíz Arquitectos studio, the road layout has been adapted to the maximum to the terrain, executing the minimum works of clearing and embankments to preserve the topography and the existing rural environment in the area.

The Playa Blanca Port Expansion project will be the first sustainable port of Puertos Canarios, opening a new stage in the port infrastructures of the Archipelago and the one with the highest traffic in the entire autonomous network of Puertos Canarios, an entity dependent on the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Housing of the Government of the Canary Islands. The execution is carried out by the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Housing of the Government of the Canary Islands with 85% financing from ERDF funds,
