The expansion of the Port of Playa Blanca has already been awarded. Finally, it will be the UTE FCC Construcción S.A. / Mosquera Carrasco Obras y Alquiler de Maquinaria who will take charge of this large-scale work. Puertos Canarios resolved last Friday to entrust this group of companies with the execution of the project for 39,330,000 euros plus IGIC. In this way, the project will be carried out for about 4 million euros less than initially budgeted.
The resolution published by the public entity on its website, signed by its president Ornella Chacón, indicates that the contracting body has considered that the offer of this UTE was "the most beneficial of those presented." Six other groups of companies opted for this public tender, to which applications could be sent from April of this year until June 23. This resolution is now subject to administrative litigation for two months.
The work is 85 percent financed with European funds, while the remaining 15 percent is assumed by Puertos Canarios with its own funds. This is one of the great demands of the southern municipality in recent years. The City Council pointed out when the works went out to tender that the work will allow the docking of cruise ships of up to 300 meters in length and "boost the economy of the island's first tourist center."
As Puertos Canarios explained when obtaining the approval of Costas for the expansion, with these works the port of the municipality of Yaiza will go from an area of 91,470 square meters to reach 205,569 square meters of total area. Among other facilities, the project includes a new 300-meter-long dike, new parking areas and also a maritime station with a commercial area.
