The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands has made effective the payment of a total of 550,416 euros to a total of 67 beneficiaries of livestock farms in Lanzarote that were affected by the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The total for all of the Canary Islands amounts to 8.5 million euros in direct aid to more than 900 owners of the islands.
The autonomous department, through GMR Canarias, has paid these funds destined to companies and self-employed owners of livestock farms of goat, sheep, cattle, rabbit, pig and poultry, in order to alleviate the economic losses derived from the war conflict.
The Minister of the branch, Alicia Vanoostende, highlighted that "in a complex situation for the livestock farmers of the Canary Islands, we reinforce and support their work with the budgetary increase in extraordinary aid that is fundamental to inject liquidity into an essential activity for our primary sector."
The increase in the prices of raw materials for animal feed, as well as the increase in the cost of energy and fuels has aggravated the situation of the professionals of the sector. To this is added the specific characteristics of the islands that, due to their insularity and remoteness, have a greater dependence on external inputs, with an extra cost associated with transport.
Vanoostende recalled that from the Government of the Canary Islands "we have reinforced the work of the sector with the implementation of several measures among which stand out the more than 30 million euros of extraordinary aid destined to the sector (including Covid aid); the aid of the POSEI livestock of 2022 and this year has been improved; the application of the Law of the Food Chain and the program of control actions; the creation of the Observatory of Prices; the tool available to calculate the costs of production; the dashboards of import and export of products; as well as the open data that are published on the website of the Ministry and in the mobile application AgriGobCan, among others."
