Lanzarote ended 2020 with 18,297 unemployed, 61.4% more than the previous year. However, according to figures from the Canarian Employment Observatory, the island closed December with 93 fewer unemployed than in November, which represents a decrease of 0.5%.
Unemployment grew last month in three of the seven municipalities of the island, decreasing in Haría, Tías, Tinajo and Yaiza. Specifically, Arrecife ended the year with 9,356 unemployed, two more than in November; Haría did so with 510, 26 less than the previous month; and San Bartolomé with 1,991, 10 more than in November.
Teguise had 1,779 unemployed at the end of December, 19 more than the previous month; while Tias closed the year with 2,045 unemployed, 34 less than the previous month. Finally, Tinajo ended December with 623 unemployed, 34 less than in November; and Yaiza did so with 2,027, 30 less than the previous month.
Regarding hiring, according to data published by the Cabildo Data Center, in all of 2020, 29,557 contracts were signed on the island, 56.7% less than the previous year, when there were 68,338. For its part, in December there were 2,029 contracts signed, 59% less than the same month of 2019 and 5.7% less than in November 2020.
In the Canary Islands as a whole, 2020 closed with 269,437 unemployed, 29.38% more than a year ago. Furthermore, compared to November, there is also an increase in unemployment of 1,118 people, which represents an increase of 0.42%.
Nationally, December ended with 3,888,137 unemployed, 22.9% more than in 2019 and 0.9% more than the previous month.
