In July 2020, the Canary Islands registered the sale of 1,143 homes, which represents 54.8% less than in the same month of the previous year, according to data published this Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), which indicates that it is the largest drop in Spain.

The data show a rate of 63 transactions per 100,000 inhabitants in the archipelago, below the national average, which is 88 sales per 100,000 inhabitants.

Most of the homes sold in July in the Canary Islands were free (1,107) and 36 were protected; in addition, most were used (905) and 238 were new.

In Spain as a whole, the sale of homes fell by 32.4% last July compared to the same month in 2019, totaling 32,654 transactions, its highest figure since last March, when the Covid-19 pandemic was declared.

However, in monthly terms (July over June), the sale of homes skyrocketed by 20%, its largest growth in a month of July in at least five years.

With the year-on-year decline in July, marked by the health crisis, the sale of homes has accumulated five consecutive months of negative year-on-year rates after falling by 18.6% in March, 39.2% in April, 53.7% in May and 34.3% in June.

The year-on-year decrease in home sales in July was a consequence of the decline in transactions on used homes by 34.9%, to 25,887 transactions, and the 21.2% cut in the sale of new homes, to 6,767 transactions.
