Canary Islands trade, the one that increased its sales the most in 2024

Retail sales increased by 5.2% in 2024 in the Canary Islands compared to a year earlier, placing it above the state average of 2.1%, according to data provided this Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

In the series corrected for calendar effects, they increased at the state level by 1.7% last year in year-on-year terms. Since the month of July, this indicator on sector sales reflects positive data.

In December alone, this statistic at constant prices, that is, eliminating the effect of price variation, increased by 6.5% in the archipelago, which became the Spanish region with the highest index ahead of Murcia (4.9%), Catalonia (4.7%) and Andalusia (3.9%).

Looking at the evolution of sales by groups in the Canary Islands, these rose by 2.3% in food and 10.5% in the rest.

At the state level, the cash register of retail stores experienced an average increase of 3.5% compared to the same month of 2023, with an increase in the employment rate of 1.7% compared to December 2023.

In the specific case of the Canary Islands, employment in this sector rose by 3.7% compared to December 2023.
