These days, coinciding with the harvest efforts in Lanzarote, the second chapter of the series of short documentary films entitled “Wines of Lanzarote, a story to tell” has been released online. This is an audiovisual project of the Designation of Origin ‘Vinos de Lanzarote’ that aims to tell unknown aspects of the island's viticulture.
It should be noted that in 2019 the previous installment, The Relay, received the Jury Prize at the Lanzarote International Film Festival.
This year, the short film is titled “La Geria, Inspiration” and tells how the history of this emblematic agricultural and volcanic space of Lanzarote has inspired different personalities related to the viticulture or the culture of Lanzarote. Thus, the video features the singer Beni Ferrer, the archaeologist María Antonia Perera, the historian María José Morales or the painter and draftsman Santiago Alemán Valls, among others.

The eruptions of the 18th century, one of the largest in recent centuries, caused an unprecedented crisis, leaving the island with much less population and the loss of numerous towns and agricultural areas buried by the lava flows that gave birth to Timanfaya. However, the island's farmer realized that, thanks to the volcanic ash and a titanic effort to move land, he could grow fruit trees, including vineyards. That was the origin of wines in Lanzarote and the origin of a story that for generations led thousands of farmers to make an enormous effort to give birth to a viticulture that would survive the island's scarce rainfall.
It is planned that before the end of the year, the Regulatory Council will launch the third installment of this documentary series. In this case, the theme will revolve around Lanzarote wine as a pioneering example of a sustainable use of natural resources and as an activity with economic, landscape, social and cultural profitability for the island.
The short film was made by Liken Films, a production company led by Pedro Pérez and David Hernández, who also had the collaboration of the historian Mario Ferrer Peñate.
