Last Friday at noon, Bodegas el Grifo presented its innovative winter harvest, or early spring harvest, to various authorities and guests. This took place on its Playa Quemada estate, a place on the island with much warmer temperatures, which has allowed for the development of this innovative cultivation project.
In this harvest, a total of 5,000 kilos of grapes have been collected, characterized by great freshness, a higher level of acidity, and a much more progressive cultivation. At the time of the presentation, the wine produced was in the fermentation process.
Fermín Otamendi, co-owner of the winery, was in charge of presenting this experience. He then introduced Juan Jesús Martín, managing director of Bodegas El Grifo, who emphasizes that "this project was born out of our winery's concern for sustainability."
Also present were Jorge Rodríguez and Lorena Díaz, both winemakers at Bodegas El Grifo, and Francisco Raimundo García Reyes, the estate's winegrower. For Francisco, "this project has been a great motivation, since, on the one hand, I have had all the technological and analytical support of Bodegas El Grifo, and on the other hand, it has been a challenge to rehabilitate plots to make them productive."
As stated by Jorge Rodríguez, winemaker at the winery, "with this harvest we wanted to give visibility to that area of Playa Quemada, to the proximity of the ocean, so that when we taste this wine, we are able to perceive the salinity of the sea breeze that permeates the grape every morning. The future is promising and we have to continue investigating, in order to position Lanzarote's viticulture worldwide."
Bodegas El Grifo has expressed great satisfaction with the result of this harvest and believes that "it will be a turning point in the island's wine industry." After the presentation, attendees enjoyed an aperitif accompanied by the winery's wines.
